How big are marketing operations teams?

The honest answer: real MOPs headcount benchmarks barely exist in public. These are the traceable numbers; the popular “median MOPs team by ARR” figures circulating on aggregator sites trace to no verifiable study (see methodology).

  • Only 37% of marketing operations professionals say they have a strategic voice in their organization's decision making. (MarketingOps.com, 600+ MOPs professionals, 2025)
  • Marketing headcount growth slowed by more than 50% year over year in 2026, with the largest companies shrinking marketing organizations outright. (The CMO Survey (Duke Fuqua, Deloitte, AMA), 308 US marketing leaders, 97% VP+, Jan 2026)
  • Companies outsource 33.6% of their digital marketing activities, up from 31.6% in 2022. (The CMO Survey, 308 US marketing leaders, 2026)

  • Marketing headcount falls from a median 4.2% of total employees at 51-100 person companies to 2.6% at companies with 3,001 or more. (Pave, 2,914 companies, 2025)

How often do teams replace their marketing automation platform?

The most consequential trend on this page for anyone planning a migration: platform churn just hit multi-year lows across every core category.

  • Marketing automation platform replacement collapsed to 19.4% in 2025, down from 31.1% in 2024, ending a five-year run as the most-replaced martech category. (MarTech, Replacement Survey, 154 replacers of 207 surveyed, 2025 survey, published Mar 2026)

The numbers nobody publishes

Compiling this page surfaced a pattern: the statistics MOPs teams most need do not exist publicly. Nobody publishes the average number of active vs. orphaned smart campaigns per Marketo instance, the share of instances with a materially broken scoring model, duplicate-creation rates per 1,000 form fills, custom fields with zero writes in 12 months, measured (not self-reported) speed-to-lead from system timestamps, or real migration duration by instance complexity. Vendors publish adoption numbers, never correctness numbers.

We audit Marketo and HubSpot instances year-round and are putting those missing numbers on record in the State of Marketing Operations 2026 study, publishing Q4 2026.

Methodology: what we excluded and why

Every statistic above links to the organization that produced the data, with sample size and date where disclosed. Three sources (Gartner, Salesforce, 6sense) block automated access to their sites; those figures were verified through trade-press coverage quoting the original releases, and the links point at the primary pages, which load normally in a browser.

We excluded several numbers you will find repeated across marketing statistics roundups because they trace to no verifiable primary study: the “median MOPs team of 4.2 FTE at $50M ARR” figure (its claimed source reports do not exist), the “$12.9M annual cost of bad data” attribution, the “22.5% annual database decay” figure (traces to pre-2024 data), and the “companies lose 15-25% of revenue to poor data quality” claim (the cited academic article is from 1995 and contains no such number). If a number on this page ever fails that bar, tell us and we will remove it.

Want Your Instance's Numbers Instead of Industry Averages?

A MOPs audit measures your scoring, routing, data quality, and deliverability against how the instance should perform, and ends in a prioritized fix list.
